Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

Apprenticeship Week

 Building Howard County’s Future Workforce

National Apprenticeship Week is in full swing, and the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA) is excited to join the celebration by showcasing the transformative power of apprenticeship programs. As we continue to expand opportunities across the county, our partnerships with the Office of Workforce Development, Howard Community College and the County Executive’s Office are key to creating meaningful career pathways that empower individuals and strengthen businesses.

Why Apprenticeships Matter in Howard County

Apprenticeships play a critical role in developing a skilled and resilient workforce. They bridge the gap between education and employment by providing hands-on training, mentorship and industry-recognized certifications. For Howard County residents, apprenticeships are a gateway to stable, high-paying jobs in thriving industries like the trades, technology, healthcare and advanced manufacturing. For businesses, they’re a strategic tool to build a reliable talent pipeline, foster innovation and enhance employee retention.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 93% of apprentices retain employment after completing their program, with an average starting wage of $77,000 annually. In Howard County, these programs are helping both individuals and businesses thrive, solidifying our community’s reputation as a leader in workforce development.

Expanding Apprenticeship Opportunities

With Howard County’s diverse economy and commitment to innovation, expanding apprenticeships is a natural fit. HCEDA, in collaboration with the Office of Workforce Development, is actively working to connect local employers with resources to develop apprenticeship programs. These efforts include:

  • Promoting Apprenticeships Across Industries: While traditional apprenticeships are often associated with trades, Howard County is leveraging these programs to build talent in technology, healthcare, manufacturing and more. This diversity reflects the changing demands of the modern workforce.
  • Partnering With Local Employers: HCEDA works closely with businesses to identify skill gaps and design customized apprenticeship programs. These programs help employers address immediate workforce needs while creating long-term growth opportunities for participants.
  • Supporting Workforce Equity: Apprenticeships in Howard County are helping to bridge equity gaps by providing access to high-quality training and career opportunities for underrepresented populations, including women and minorities.
