Black History Month Spotlight: Boyd Cru Wines

Boyd Cru Wines

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor the Black entrepreneurs who are building businesses, shaping industries and fostering community. This month, we highlight Boyd Cru Wines, a Black-owned winery in Maryland that is redefining the wine experience with a focus on community, sustainability and storytelling.

Founded by Matthew and Jon’ll Boyd, Boyd Cru Wines is more than just a winery. It is a celebration of life’s moments, a commitment to sustainable winemaking and a tribute to the loved ones who inspired their journey. Their 100 percent Maryland-grown wines are crafted with care, blending tradition with creativity to offer a unique and welcoming experience for wine lovers.

Building a Legacy Through Wine

For Matthew and Jon’ll, wine has always been part of their story from celebrating milestones and family gatherings to moments of reflection and connection. However, their journey toward starting Boyd Cru Wines began in April 2023 in the wake of deep personal loss. After losing Matthew’s mother, Jon’ll’s nephew and later Matthew’s father, the couple realized that life is short. They made the bold decision to turn their passion for wine into a lasting legacy that brings people together.

With backgrounds in chemistry, business and event planning, Matthew and Jon’ll bring both science and creativity to their winemaking. Their wines are crafted to be approachable, vibrant and joyful, offering a fresh take on traditional Maryland-grown vinifera and hybrid grapes.

A Commitment to Community and Sustainability

Boyd Cru Wines believes that wine is more than just a beverage. It is a way to build community, celebrate culture and create unforgettable experiences. The company is committed to locally grown sustainably produced wines, ensuring that every bottle reflects both quality and responsibility.

Love the wine you’re with is more than just a tagline. It is the foundation of Boyd Cru Wines. Their mission is to cultivate the richness of the vine and the story of the wine, from each grape to each bottle to each table.

Exciting Growth on the Horizon

Boyd Cru Wines is in the midst of an exciting chapter. In April 2025 they will open their first tasting room at Savage Mill, providing a welcoming space where visitors can experience their wines firsthand, learn about their craft and connect with others over shared experiences. In preparation, they are curating events and collaborations with other minority-owned businesses and local artists, further strengthening their mission to uplift and celebrate the community.

Until their tasting room opens, Boyd Cru Wines offers private tastings, wine education sessions and curated wine experiences in collaboration with other small businesses. They have also launched the Legacy Founders Wine Club, an exclusive membership for those who want to be part of their journey from the start.

Why Black History Month Matters

Black entrepreneurs have long played a crucial role in shaping industries yet they continue to face barriers to funding, visibility and resources. Black History Month is a time to celebrate these achievements while advocating for continued support and opportunity. Businesses like Boyd Cru Wines exemplify the power of Black-owned enterprises to create economic impact, build community and inspire future generations.

Throughout February, we are featuring Black-owned businesses that are driving innovation and strengthening our local economy. Our commitment extends beyond this month as we continue to provide resources, business development opportunities and networking support for Black entrepreneurs year-round.
