Downtown Columbia Partnership Celebrates 10 Years of Building Community

Downtown Columbia

The Downtown Columbia Partnership (DTCP) is thrilled to celebrate its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of dedication to transforming Downtown Columbia into a vibrant and connected community. Created through Howard County legislation, DTCP was established to bring to life the vision outlined in the Downtown Columbia Plan, which guides the redevelopment of 391 acres in Columbia’s core.

DTCP’s mission is to make Downtown Columbia a destination of choice for residents, visitors and businesses alike. Over the past 10 years, the organization has worked tirelessly to create a thriving urban environment, hosting events, promoting cultural activities and championing sustainability and transportation initiatives.
“The Downtown Columbia Partnership fosters a physical and cultural environment that is a magnet for leading edge companies, major civic institutions, interesting stores and restaurants, visionary residents and curious visitors,” said Executive Director Phillip Dodge.

To commemorate this milestone, DTCP is hosting a members appreciation reception and unveiling even more opportunities for residents and visitors to engage with the community through exciting events and initiatives.

A Decade of Transforming Downtown Columbia

DTCP was created to bring the vision of the Downtown Columbia Plan to life. Adopted unanimously by the Howard County Council in 2010, the plan set out to make Columbia’s core a walkable, sustainable and lively urban hub. DTCP has embraced this vision by marketing Downtown Columbia, supporting cultural programming and advancing initiatives that make the area more accessible and environmentally friendly.

Events That Bring the Community Together

DTCP has become known for hosting a range of events that celebrate the unique culture and energy of Downtown Columbia. These events, often created in collaboration with partners like Howard Hughes Holdings, the Merriweather Arts and Culture Commission, and the Columbia Association, draw residents and visitors to experience all the area has to offer.

Some of DTCP’s signature events include:

Books in Bloom
Launched in 2017, this literary festival has featured inspiring authors like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Held in Color Burst Park in the Merriweather District, the event draws over 2,000 attendees and continues to be a favorite among book lovers. The next Books in Bloom is set for May 10, 2025.

Discover Downtown Columbia 5/10K
Now in its 10th year, this popular race combines fitness, fun and community connection. From seasoned runners to families participating in the 1-Mile Fun Run, the event showcases Downtown Columbia’s natural beauty and local retailers.

BikeAround Downtown
This event encourages residents to explore Downtown Columbia’s trails and pathways by bike. It’s a fun way to enjoy the area’s scenic routes while promoting cycling as an alternative to driving.

Festive Fridays
Set for December 6, 13 and 20, Festive Fridays feature family-friendly holiday activities and a lively cocktail crawl that introduces participants to Lakefront restaurants and pop-up dining spots.

Culinary Walking Tours
Foodies and residents alike enjoy exploring Downtown Columbia’s culinary scene through these walking tours. Participants sample small plates and specialty drinks from local restaurants while experiencing the walkability of the growing urban center.

Promoting Sustainability and Accessibility

DTCP’s work goes beyond events. The organization is committed to making Downtown Columbia more walkable and less auto-dependent. Partnering with the Howard County Office of Transportation, DTCP has hosted walk audits and information sessions to gather feedback and identify ways to improve pedestrian access and transportation alternatives.

Earlier this year, DTCP held a Commuter Incentives Happy Hour, sharing tips and tools with employees in Downtown Columbia to encourage sustainable commuting. These efforts reflect DTCP’s broader mission to create a connected and environmentally conscious community.

Guided by Community Leaders

DTCP is led by a Board of Directors that brings together representatives from local businesses, organizations and residents:

  • Chairman: Greg Fitchitt, Howard Hughes Holdings
  • Secretary: Rashida George, Howard Hughes Holdings
  • Jennifer Jones, Howard County Economic Development Authority
  • Shawn MacInnes, Columbia Association
  • Mary Williams, The Mall in Columbia
  • Kimberly Prescott, Prescott HR
  • Alyse Carter, Resident

Their collective leadership ensures that DTCP continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of the community.

Live, Work, Play and Visit

As DTCP celebrates this milestone, it remains committed to its mission of making Downtown Columbia a thriving place to live, work, play and visit. With a packed calendar of events and initiatives designed to bring people together, the organization is shaping a vibrant future for the area.
