Women’s History Feature Series: Queen Takes Book – A Dream Brought to Life

Queen Takes Book

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting Queen Takes Book, Columbia’s independent bookstore and the woman behind its success, Katie McNally. Built on the belief that reading can transform, inspire and connect, Queen Takes Book is more than just a bookstore—it’s a place where readers of all ages can discover stories that resonate. Thanks to the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA) Catalyst Fund, this dream became a reality.

From Dream to Reality: The Story of Queen Takes Book

For years, the idea of owning a bookstore felt like a distant dream. Katie McNally imagined a welcoming space where people could gather, explore books and share their love of reading. But turning that vision into a reality wasn’t easy. Securing permits, negotiating leases and handling business logistics were overwhelming. That’s where HCEDA stepped in. “Just having somebody say, ‘No, no, no, try this’ or ‘Here are some people you should talk to’ made all the difference,” Katie said. The HCEDA Catalyst Fund, designed to support small businesses, covered nearly half of the bookstore’s startup costs, making it possible to secure a location, stock the shelves and create a space for the community. “It’s no exaggeration to say we wouldn’t be here without it.”

The Magic of a Local Bookstore

Independent bookstores offer something special. Unlike online retailers, they provide a personalized experience, meaningful recommendations and a sense of discovery that can’t be replicated by an algorithm. Queen Takes Book embraces that philosophy, curating a collection that celebrates diverse voices and perspectives. One of the store’s standout features is The Kids Quarter, a cozy space with a checkered print rug that ties into the store’s chess-inspired name. “It’s soft, it’s inviting and it’s where kids plop down to look for their next book,” Katie shared. A chessboard sits nearby, often drawing in parents and children for a quick game. “We’ve seen parents teaching their kids how to play, siblings challenging each other and friends enjoying a match. It’s those little moments that make this bookstore special.”

Howard County’s Support for Women Entrepreneurs

The success of Queen Takes Book reflects Howard County’s commitment to supporting women-owned businesses. With funding from the HCEDA Catalyst Fund, this independent bookstore became a thriving part of Columbia’s literary scene. The Catalyst Fund is a locally managed revolving loan program that helps small, minority and women-owned businesses. It provides financing for business expansion, inventory purchases, commercial real estate and working capital. As businesses repay their loans, the funds are reinvested to help more entrepreneurs launch their dreams, create jobs and strengthen Howard County’s economy.

Beyond Books: A Hub for Community and Connection

Queen Takes Book is more than a place to buy books—it’s a space where people come together. The bookstore regularly hosts author readings and book signings where readers can meet their favorite writers, book clubs that spark discussions and build friendships, personalized recommendations to help customers find their next great read and children’s storytelling events that inspire young readers. “Now, as a bookstore owner, I get to walk into my shop, take a deep breath and realize what a special place this is. What a special place we’ve created. And I’m just grateful.”

Why Independent Bookstores Matter

In an age where digital convenience dominates, local bookstores remind us why in-person experiences still matter. Studies show that communities with independent bookstores have stronger literacy rates, greater civic engagement and a thriving local economy. When you shop at Queen Takes Book, you’re not just buying books—you’re supporting a woman-owned small business, investing in your local community and preserving a space where stories come to life. The store’s commitment to diverse literature, community engagement and personalized service makes it an essential part of Columbia’s cultural landscape.

A Bright Future for Queen Takes Book

With support from HCEDA, the Catalyst Fund and a community that values independent bookstores, Queen Takes Book is thriving. It’s a shining example of what happens when passion, perseverance and local economic support come together. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we recognize the resilience and dedication of women entrepreneurs like Katie McNally. Her story inspires future business owners to take the leap and build something meaningful in their communities.
